Sciensano

Belgium

Sciensano can count on more than 900 staff members who are committed to human and animal health every day. Sciensano’s strength and uniqueness lie within the holistic and multidisciplinary approach to health. More particularly we focus on the close and indissoluble interconnection between human and animal health and their environment (the “One health” concept).

By combining different research perspectives within this framework, Sciensano contributes in its unique way to everybody’s health. For this, Sciensano builds on the more than 100 years of scientific expertise of the former Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (CODA-CERVA) and the ex-Scientific Institute of Public Health (WIV-ISP).

Role in CoDiet

We will build on the policy benchmarking work undertaken in the H2020 Science and Technology in childhood Obesity (STOP) and Policy Evaluation Network (PEN) projects, utilising the Health Food Environment Policy Index (Food-EPI) across 11 European countries between 2019 and 2021. Sciensano will coordinate a policy mapping and benchmarking effort to update the evidence collected from six of the 11 countries.

Sciensano will work with the six countries’ national public health agencies to update the evidence documents upon which the earlier Food-EPI assessment relied, covering 24 policy areas. Based on the countries’ Food-EPI assessments, Sciensano will develop a range of policy scenarios combining the strengths of approaches adopted in the countries observed in several key policy areas.
